Teeth Whitening vs. Porcelain Veneers

Typically caused by a combination of teeth-staining foods and beverages and poor oral hygiene, discolored or yellowed teeth can be difficult to improve. Often, the only way to reduce them is to seek help from an experienced cosmetic dentist. At Sutra Dental Spa, we proudly employ advanced teeth whitening methods or custom-crafted porcelain veneers to combat discolored teeth. We can help you determine which of these is the right option for you based on the severity of your stains and your general dental health.

The goal of medical-grade teeth whitening is very straightforward: to whiten and enhance the smile safely and effectively. This goal can be achieved through in-office procedures, take-home whitening trays, or some combination of both. For instance, we offer the popular Zoom!® whitening solution, in which a whitening gel is applied to the teeth and activated with an LED light. Zoom!® teeth whitening is renowned for its ability to significantly brighten the smile in a single, one-hour session. Alternatively, the KöR® Whitening Deep Bleaching™System involves an initial whitening procedure and the use of trays to be worn at home. Like the Zoom!® method, the KöR® system is highly regarded in the dental community for its positive results.

Meanwhile, porcelain veneers can conceal a variety of cosmetic concerns, such as stains, discoloration, cracks, gaps, chips, misalignment, and misshapen teeth. At Sutra Dental Spa, we create our veneers using porcelain – a material known for both its durability and lifelike shine – to match seamlessly with the rest of a patient’s teeth. Veneers are thin shells that are placed over teeth to conceal their imperfections and bring out the beauty of the smile.

While both porcelain veneers and teeth whitening solutions can effectively reduce the appearance of stains, more pronounced discoloration is usually best suited for veneers. This is because the most severe stains sometimes do not respond even to the strongest bleaching solution. Additionally, porcelain veneers are highly versatile and can also benefit patients who suffer from additional aesthetic dental issues, such as gaps or chips. Patients also sometimes prefer veneers because, unlike teeth whitening treatments, they do not require touch-up treatments, and their effects generally last much longer than those of teeth whitening. That said, we understand that all of our patients are unique, which is why we thoroughly evaluate your needs and goals before helping you choose a treatment.
