Inlays and Onlays

For individuals struggling with tooth decay and damage, inlays and onlays offer an effective solution for cosmetic improvements. This option blends strength, aesthetics, and longevity, preserving much of your natural tooth structure while restoring function and appearance. At Sutra Dental Spa, cosmetic dentist Jimmy Wu, DDS regularly performs aesthetically enhancing dental procedures, including inlays and onlays, to help his patients achieve their dream smile.

What Are the Benefits of Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are a conservative dental treatment used to repair back teeth with mild to moderate decay or damaged surfaces. They are especially beneficial as they often preserve more of the natural tooth structure compared to dental crowns. Typically made from durable materials such as porcelain or composite resin, inlays and onlays are custom-fitted and bonded to the tooth, helping enhance strength and prevent further decay. These restorations can also offer a superior fit, maintain tooth integrity, and minimize further damage or the need for more extensive treatment in the future. Aesthetically, inlays and onlays can seamlessly match the natural color of your teeth, providing a more discreet and attractive alternative to metal fillings.

Who Is a Candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

Candidates for inlays and onlays are typically patients who have mild to moderate tooth damage that is too extensive for a traditional filling but not severe enough to require a full dental crown. These restorations can be ideal for teeth affected by decay, cracks, or old, worn fillings when the remaining tooth structure is still healthy and strong. Inlays and onlays may also be a good option for patients seeking a durable, natural-looking solution that preserves more of the natural tooth compared to crowns.

What Is the Inlays and Onlays Procedure Like?

The inlays and onlays procedure usually begins with Dr. Wu removing decay or old filling material and preparing the tooth for the restoration. An impression of the tooth is then taken utilizing our CEREC® 3D imaging technology. Once crafted, Dr. Wu will check the fit of the inlay or onlay. The inlay will sit inside the tooth and may be similar to a tooth-colored filling, while the onlay covers the chewing surface, or cusp, of the tooth. Once a proper fit is ensured, it is bonded to the tooth with a strong resin adhesive and polished to blend seamlessly with the natural tooth, restoring its appearance and function.

What Does Inlay and Onlay Recovery Entail?

Recovery from inlays and onlays is generally quick and involves minimal discomfort. After the procedure, you might experience slight sensitivity to temperature and pressure, which typically subsides within a few days. It is important to avoid chewing directly on the restored tooth until any temporary sensitivity has resolved. Good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, are crucial to ensure the longevity of these cosmetic restorations. Additionally, it may be best to avoid hard and sticky foods in the initial days to prevent dislodging or damaging the new inlay and/or onlay. Regular dental check-ups are recommended to monitor the inlay or onlay and maintain overall dental health.

How Long Do Inlay and Onlay Results Last?

With proper care, inlays and onlays can last 10 to 30 years or longer. Their longevity often depends on factors such as the material used, oral hygiene habits, and bite forces. Porcelain and composite inlays and onlays are known to be highly durable and resistant to wear and staining. Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding chewing on hard objects, and visiting Dr. Wu regularly for checkups can help extend the lifespan of inlay and onlay restorations.

How Much Do Inlays and Onlays Cost?

The cost of inlays and onlays can vary widely depending on several factors, including:

  • The material(s) used
  • The complexity of the procedure
  • The tooth’s location

Generally, inlays and onlays can be more expensive than direct fillings but less costly than crowns, reflecting their effectiveness and durability. Once your treatment plan has been developed, a member of our team will provide you with a customized quote. We also offer financing options through CareCredit® for qualified applicants. Available plans can help make treatment payments easier to budget for and more manageable.

Additional Inlay and Onlay Frequently Asked Questions

How do inlays and onlays differ from fillings and crowns?

Inlays and onlays fall between fillings and crowns in terms of coverage and strength. Fillings are usually used for small areas of decay and are placed directly into the tooth, while crowns are designed to cover the entire tooth to restore severe damage. Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that can fit precisely within or over portions of the tooth, preserving more natural structure than a crown while providing greater durability than a filling.

Can I eat normally after getting an inlay or onlay?

Yes, most patients can eat normally after getting an inlay or onlay once the restoration is permanently placed. You may be advised to avoid hard or sticky foods for a short period to allow the bonding material to fully set and to prevent unnecessary stress on the tooth. If you receive a temporary restoration, Dr. Wu may recommend softer foods until your final inlay or onlay is placed. Following aftercare instructions helps ensure comfort and long-lasting results.

Does dental insurance cover inlays and onlays?

Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for inlays and onlays, depending on if they are considered a restorative procedure or cosmetic treatment. Coverage amounts can vary by plan and may be similar to those for crowns or large fillings. It’s best to check with your dental insurance provider to understand your specific benefits and any out-of-pocket costs.
