Foods and Habits to Avoid if You Have Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are generally built to last, but they’re not invincible. Hard and sticky foods, teeth grinding, and a few common everyday habits can quietly chip away at your crown’s lifespan. The great news is that protecting your crown doesn’t usually require a major lifestyle overhaul—just a few small, mindful changes go a long way.

Many people choose dental crowns to restore a cracked tooth, protect a tooth after a root canal, or to simply enhance their smile. A well-placed crown can last 10 to 15 years or more, and with a little extra care, it can go even longer. At Sutra Dental Spa, cosmetic dentist Jimmy Wu, DDS, uses state-of-the-art CEREC® technology to craft precise, custom-fit crowns designed to stand the test of time, and he’s equally committed to making sure patients know how to protect them long after leaving our chair.

The right daily habits can make all the difference. Here’s what you should avoid:

Foods That Can Put Your Crown at Risk

Hard and Crunchy Foods

Biting into a whole apple, gnawing on a chicken wing, snacking on hard candies, or chewing on ice might seem harmless, but these foods can put significant stress on your crown, especially in the first few days after placement when the area is still settling. Even a well-bonded crown can crack or dislodge under repeated force.

Instead, cut hard fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces, try seedless grapes over whole apples, and let ice melt in your drink rather than crunch it.

Sticky and Chewy Foods

Caramel, taffy, gummy candies, and even some chewy breads can grab onto a crown and pull at it. This can be especially true in the first couple of weeks after your crown is placed, when the cement is still fully bonding. Sticky foods can loosen the crown over time or, in some cases, pop it right off.

Instead, consider dark chocolate (the kind that melts rather than sticks) as it is typically a more crown-friendly treat if you’re craving something sweet.

Extremely Hard Foods Chewed On One Side

If you have a crown on one side of your mouth, be mindful about unconsciously favoring that side. Tough meats, crusty baguettes, or whole nuts can wear down the crown material faster than you’d expect with repeated stress.

Habits That Can Shorten Your Crown’s Lifespan

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Many people grind their teeth at night without even realizing it, and it can put enormous pressure on both natural teeth and crowns. Over time, grinding wears down the crown material and can cause cracking. If you experience bruxism, a custom night guard is often one of the best things you can do to protect your crown.

Using Your Teeth as Tools

Your crown is not a multi-tool. The habit of using teeth to open a bag of chips, pull off a clothing tag, or uncap a bottle cap can chip or crack the porcelain or cause the crown to shift.

Skipping Regular Cleanings

A crown covers the visible part of your tooth, but the gumline and the tooth root underneath are still vulnerable to decay and gum disease. Skipping your scheduled cleanings allows plaque and bacteria to build-up around the margins of the crown, which can lead to decay underneath it.

Additionally, attending regular dental visits with Dr. Wu gives him the chance to check how your crown is holding up and catch any issues early before it becomes a bigger issue.

Consuming Staining Foods and Drinks in Excess

If your crown is made from porcelain or ceramic, it’s generally more stain-resistant than natural enamel, but it’s not completely immune. More importantly, natural teeth around it can stain while the crown stays the same shade, creating a mismatch over time. Coffee, red wine, tea, and dark berries are the usual suspects. If you’re not ready to give these up, rinse your mouth with water afterward or enjoy them with a straw.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

The good news? None of these tips require a dramatic lifestyle overhaul. They are mostly small, mindful swaps—cutting your food into pieces, wearing a night guard, keeping up with dental cleanings, and resisting the urge to use your teeth for anything other than eating.

At Sutra Dental Spa, Dr. Wu and our team are here to answer your questions and make sure your crown feels as good as it looks. If something ever feels off, whether that’s sensitivity, looseness, or discomfort, don’t wait to contact our office. Crowns can be wonderfully durable when they’re taken care of, and we’re your partners in making sure your restoration lasts.

Key Takeaways

  • Avoid foods like ice, hard candies, caramel, and gummy snacks that can crack, loosen, or dislodge your crown over time.
  • Be mindful of repeated chewing stress, try to distribute chewing evenly, and cut tough foods into smaller pieces.
  • Protect against teeth grinding with a custom night guard.
  • Never use your teeth as tools, as this can put unnecessary strain on your crown and risk chipping the porcelain.
  • Keep up with your regular dental visits to monitor the fit of your crown and catch any early signs of wear or decay before they become bigger problems.
