How to Get Rid of Plaque on Teeth

Plaque is a common dental concern that, if left untreated, can lead to serious problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. It is characterized by a sticky film on the teeth and along the gumline that can harden into tartar (also known as calculus) if it is not properly addressed. Fortunately, managing plaque is achievable with consistent care and the right techniques. Ways you can effectively remove plaque and maintain a healthy smile include:

  • Brush your teeth regularly and correctly. A consistent and strong brushing routine is often the first line of defense against plaque. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces of your teeth. Be gentle to avoid harming your gums, and use short, circular motions to loosen plaque without causing abrasions.
  • Floss daily. This can help remove plaque from areas your toothbrush can’t reach, particularly between your teeth and under the gumline. Gently guide the floss between your teeth and curve it around each tooth, moving it up and down against the side of the tooth to dislodge plaque without irritating the gums.
  • Use mouthwash. An antimicrobial mouthwash can help reduce plaque and prevent the buildup of bacteria that cause plaque. Swish mouthwash as directed, typically for 30 seconds to one minute, to reach areas that brushing and flossing might miss.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Foods high in sugars and starches can contribute to the formation of plaque. Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Additionally, crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots can help clean your teeth naturally.
  • Attend scheduled dental cleanings. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important for maintaining oral health and preventing plaque buildup. This can also be an opportunity for tartar removal, as tartar is more difficult to address with brushing and flossing alone.
